I served as a Judge Advocate General (JAG) in the Marine Corps. I had numerous roles including command advisement, operational law and prosecution. However, my most important role was being a leader and a mentor to young men and women who had just begun their careers and adult lives.
The military instilled in me the duty that we have to those who work with us. The duty to be attentive to their needs both professionally and personally. My experience has shaped how I practice law today. It is incredibly important to me that, as an attorney, I involve my legal assistants and paralegals in the “why” of what we are doing and when we are doing it. If you involve others in the process and show them that they are valued, you have a much more productive and engaged team.
The proudest moment I have had as an attorney was in the Marines when I walked to the parking lot on my last day. Each of the junior Marines I had mentored along the way walked me to my car to personally shake my hand and see me off. I have long forgotten about the legal opinions I wrote and cases I tried, but that moment I will always remember clear as day.
